Topic: Bicycle and pedestrian initiatives from the City of Miami and the Miami-Dade MPO

(The presentation has been approved for professional development hour credits. If interested, please bring PE no. and $5 for processing fee)

Presentation #1:

This presentation will focus on the aggressive implementation of the bicycle master plan and the ongoing efforts to promote Miami as a bike-friendly City.

About the Speaker:

Jose Gonzalez is currently the Assistant Transportation Coordinator for the City of Miami.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.   Jose graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Florida International University and has worked in the transportation engineering field for over 16 years.  Prior to joining the City of Miami’s Office of Transportation in 2004, Jose commenced his career with the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, where he graduated from the Professional Engineer Training Program.  During his 10-year tenure with FDOT, Jose managed various multimodal transportation projects of regional and statewide significance.  Currently, in the City of Miami, he is responsible for coordinating the planning and implementation of all transportation and transit projects in the City as well as serving as a liaison with external transportation agencies.  Jose is currently involved with significant projects such as the Port of Miami Tunnel and the Marlins Ballpark and serves as the Program Manager for the Miami Trolley Program and the City’s Red Light Traffic Safety Camera Program.

Presentation #2:

As gas prices rise non-motorized modes of transportation are becoming more popular and federal, state and local governments are looking for strategies to safely increase the number of people who walk or use a bicycle for transportation.  This presentation will highlight the Miami-Dade Bicycle/Pedestrian program including information on non-motorized transportation facilities, safety and trends in walking and bicycling.

About the Speaker:

David Henderson has served as the Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator for the Metropolitan Planning Organization since 1999.  In his position he works with the Florida Department of Transportation, the Miami-Dade Public Works Department, Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department, local municipalities and other groups to plan and fund bike and pedestrian facilities, safety improvements and strategies to encourage people to walk and bicycle more often.  David received a Bachelor’s degree in economics from Indiana University and a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning degree from the University of Miami.  He is a member of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals and is currently President of the Board of the Florida Bicycle Association.
